Project Overview

Dorchester Borough Gardens in Dorchester on the South Coast has undergone a £1.6m renovation, made possible a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to redevelop the gardens and make them more secure and appealing to families to visit.

The project involved a complete refurbishment of the park which has had hardly any perimeter security since railings were removed during World War II. The new perimeter railings needed to replicate the style of the previous railings and gates, which were designed to be both aesthetically pleasing whilst also maximising security and preventing access to the park at night.

Alpha Rail Solution

Alpha Rail successfully tendered to manufacture, supply and install 650 metres of standard vertical bar railings to Council for the perimeter of the park plus 160m of Bow Top railings for to the children’s play areas.

The park’s complete renovation included new play areas and the refurbishment of an existing fountain. The railings were painted on site in an attractive grey finish that complemented the hedges and plantings.
Alpha Rail, which is based in Nottinghamshire, has extensive experience in park restoration. The company was presented with a plaque to celebrate their part in the project at a special opening ceremony for the park, attended by hundreds of local residents as well as the local Mayor.

Dorchester Borough Gardens is the latest in a list of prestigious parks that Alpha Rail has supplied with new gates and railings, with others including Battersea Park in Wandsworth (winner of a Civic Trust Award), Roundhay Park in Leeds and Handsworth Park in Birmingham

"The railings have made a huge difference to the park and to local people. An important part of the renovation was to ensure that the plants, play areas and other features were protected, which is the reason why we required high quality railings and gates. Alpha Rail supplied a high quality product that closely replicated the previous railings, their attention to detail was impeccable and we were more than satisfied with their service. The end results speak for themselves and we have received much positive feedback from local residents and visitors to the area."
