This is the third in a six-part story describing the metal railings and gates production process. We explain how your order will be dealt with, right from the initial enquiry, through to the supply and installation of the finished metalwork.
Once a metal railings project has been approved and the order placed, our technical team set about the process of transforming CAD drawings into detailed technical drawings that specify the precise measurements of steel railing section sizes, anchors, joints, locks, catches, handles and anything else that has been specified. This includes measurements for the distance between bars so that the number of posts and their fixing positions can be calculated. The amount of load each panel can take is also calculated to ensure the installation is fit for purpose. We also use the information gathered by our surveying team who use total station precision measuring equipment to calculate exact dimensions. This includes any curvatures and any differences in ground levels to plot all required the measurement needed to manufacture to the design brief.
These technical specification documents are then sent to a quality control specialist who re-checks everything to ensure nothing has been mis-understood or omitted.
These technical drawings are passed to the procurement team so that they can order any special items and begin preparing the job pack of materials our fabricators will require to begin manufacturing the metal railings, gates, archways or other bespoke metalwork.
Once the components are all ready, job packs are delivered in metal stillages to the workshop and our expert team of welders, millers and fabrication specialists begin shaping the components exactly to the technical drawings.
Finials and rail heads
The appearance of vertical bar fencing can be further enhanced by the addition of decorative rail-heads and finials. Alpha Rail offer a wide range of designs to choose from and can also make purpose made castings for specialist commissions.
A team of machining specialists will work on the designs chosen for the finials and a specialist lathe will be used to machine the finial into the desired shape and size of the design that has been specified. Each finial will be procured or bespoke manufactured and then supplied to the welder to be fixed on the top of each steel railing section or post.Tags: Metal railings and gates – The manufacturing process
