Who would have thought that metal railings would play such an integral part in the UK campaign for women’s rights to get a vote in parliamentary elections.
In 1903, the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) was set up in Manchester. The WSPU aimed to adopt more militant tactics to win the vote. Their members later became known as Suffragettes and were founded by the infamous Emmeline Pankhurst.
Suffragettes used belts like this one to chain themselves to metal railings during their many demonstrations campaigning for the right to vote. In chaining themselves to metal railings, this gave them more demonstration time as it took the police a long time to release the Suffragettes from the chain’s padlocks. It therefore meant the women had more time to make long speeches about why women should be given the vote.
