Steve Shirley

When Steve Shirley joined Alpha Rail he probably did not think he would be around long enough to see the company develop to become one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of metal railings, gates and pedestrian guardrail – let alone be the man at the helm of a company that is proud to be celebrating its 30th anniversary.

As we continue our series of interviews featuring employees who are also celebrating 30 years of service with Alpha Rail, Steve shares his views on the responsibility of being Managing Director.

Steve Shirley – Managing Director

The experience and grounding of being the shop floor manager has enabled Steve Shirley to learn all aspects of the production process and now as MD he uses this to continuously improve quality and service. Having been involved in the worst ever work place accident Alpha Rail has ever experienced – he lost the end of his finger in a freak accident several years ago – Steve also has a keen eye for detail and maintaining Alpha Rail’s impeccable health and safety record.

He is another Alpha Rail long service club member. A club that has no fewer than 25 other employees with 20+ years of service.

Steve also believes that whilst the product has got more technical and demand has risen for more bespoke architectural detail, the actual production process is much the same, apart from the replacement of draughtsmen’s drawing boards with CAD design software, computers and printed not hand drawn technical specifications!

Steve is particularly proud of his team, recalling the time everyone was so committed to a project for the Athletes Village at the 2012 London Olympics that they all worked through the night to ensure project deadlines were met. The project is now a social housing development and Alpha Rail’s metal railings have become a lasting legacy for residents to enjoy.

Outside of work Steve is a huge progressive rock fan. His long hair and leathers have long since been replaced with the professional look of an MD, but the sounds of Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd will always bring the memories of 30 years ago quickly flooding back!
