Alpha Rail was appointed in 1988 by MJ Cagney to manufacture and install perimeter metal railings around St Johns Park, a playground located on Manchester Road on the Isle of Dogs.
The installation included 1800m high vertical bar metal railings mounted in arched shaped blue brick bases. These decorative railings featured circular infills and oak tree emblems that were painted green. Inside the park, flat topped metal railings were installed alongside several walkways and paths over bridges in various colours such as blue and yellow. Arched entrances featured metalwork name plates for St Johns Park.
Inside the gardens there is a feature gazebo that Alpha Rail manufactured featuring architectural metalwork cut-outs of herons, which are a common sight on the isle of dogs due to being surrounded by the River Thames.
On a recent visit to the Park in 2015, Alpha Rail was pleased to see that their metal work still looks as pristine today is it did 30 years ago and delighted that the park was still being enjoyed by local residents.
St Johns Park is one of the projects Alpha Rail has chosen to feature as part of its 30th Anniversary showcase. The aim is to feature now and then pictures of past projects to highlight how well Alpha Rail metal railings have lived up to our promise of high quality and will endure the test of time.
Other projects in the showcase include:
- Whitehall Gardens, Westminster
- Crystal Palace Park, Bromley
- Camden Gardens, London
- Beaumont Road, London
- Cherry Gardens, Bermondsey
- Raleigh Gardens, Lambeth
- Red Lion Square, Holborn
