A request for school playground railings that were “bright, low level and appealing” led to the appointment of Alpha Rail to supply metal railings and gates for Heath Primary School in Chesterfield.
The school playground had previously been surrounded by wooden fencing that was falling apart and causing health and safety issues.
It was decided to replace the wooden fencing with metal railings to contain the playground from pathways used by pupils and parents when walking to other areas of the school.
In total, Alpha Rail supplied 33 linear metres of 1100mm high bow top railing, 7.9m of 1800mm high bow top railing and a single leaf gate. Railings were also used to cordon off wall mounted air-conditioning units.
To meet the request for brightness, the railings were polyester powder coated RAL 3000 Red which will ensure their longevity and protection for at least the next twenty years. So whilst the initial outlay was slightly more than replacing with like for like wooden fencing, the long term gain of low maintenance and longevity of appearance far out weighed the initial cost saving.
The type of metal railings installed met BS EN 1176 standards. Playspec railings is a trademarked type of metal railings designed to meet the anti- entrapment requirements of the BS EN 1176 play equipment safety standard. This standard denotes that the gaps between the railings do not exceed 89mm and therefore reduce the risk of neck or head entrapment.
Commenting on the project, Business Manager, Lindsay Windle from Heath Primary school, said, “Alpha Rail provided a brilliant service. The way their installers worked around the school timetable and stopped working whilst parents and children walked past was brilliant. They were entirely professional and safely cordoned off all work areas. The metal railings look great and I would definitely recommend them to others and use again in the future if we need other architectural metalwork.”
