The front elevation of Victorian houses located in Long Preston, Yorkshire has recently undergone a transformation following the installation of metal railings manufactured and installed by Alpha Rail.
It is not very often we work directly for domestic customers, but this project suited our ability to manufacture railings and designs that are in keeping with the Victorian era.
Located on the outskirts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, West End consists of three, four storey Victorian houses built in the 19th Century. Originally the houses had wooden perimeter fences bordering them from the verge adjacent to the A65 between Skipton and Clapham.
The fencing had deteriorated over the years due to the weather and traffic grime and had become rotten. Three of the house owners decided to invest jointly to replace the fencing and decided that metal railings would not only retain the aesthetics of a Victorian era, they would also stand the test of time and be low maintenance. They had found it to be inconvenient having to repaint the wooden fence every year and by installing metal railings hoped to avoid this arduous task in the future as well as increase the value of their properties.
One of the residents found the Alpha Rail website having conducted an internet search. He was impressed with the presentation of our website and the vast array of gallery images showing the different styles, heights and finishes they could select. This proved to be the difference, as the home owners were able to gain a real sense of what the finished project might look like. Alpha Rail were therefore contracted to provide drawings and to manufacture and install metal railings.
The residents originally chose a basic flat top railing design, but following discussions with Alpha Rail we went on to supply 30 metres of decorative vertical bar metal railings. These were manufactured to a bespoke height in order to ensure the railings maintained the right sense of perspective for passing motorists.
Having seen the final drawings, the residents decided that the square centre posts lacked something. Further discussions with Alpha Rail led to the addition of round ball finial which finished off the design perfectly. The posts were mounted on square base plates that were fixed using chemical anchors in to the coping stones that topped the stone wall. The addition of a decorative finial featuring a spearhead provides the ideal finishing touch.
In order to ensure low maintenance and protection from the elements, the railings were galvanized and polyester power coated black RAL 9005.
Commenting on the project, home owner Michael Anderson said, “Everyone at Alpha Rail was incredibly patient and helpful. Not a single person we spoke to was impolite or dismissive of our domestic project. They were very understanding of our needs, and a special mention must go to Paul Johnson who helped us through the design process. The railings are of a very high quality and the fence erectors were meticulous in ensuring the final installation looked perfect with a smooth flowing level fence line.”Tags: metal railingresidential
