Bow top metal railings have been added to The Glebe, a popular destination in the world-renowned Lake District National Park.

The Glebe is a large recreational area, located south-west of Bowness-on-Windermere town centre and forms part of the town’s main tourist attraction. The recreational area comprises tennis courts, a pitch and putt, a picnic area and a number of commercial properties.

Despite it being a popular destination for visitors, research conducted by the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) found that the areas within The Glebe had deteriorated significantly. The LDNPA identified The Glebe as a strategic regeneration location and wanted to develop the area as a world class visitor destination.

Part of the Windermere Waterfront Programme, the focus of LDNPA is to maintain visitor numbers to Bowness Bay and The Glebe and ensure its continued economic contribution to the local area. Moving and parked cars are a dominant feature of the area, which detracts from the visitor experience. A key part of the improvement scheme was to make the area more user-friendly for pedestrians and cyclists.

To help with this initiative, Alpha Rail was contracted by Casey Group to manufacture and install bespoke metal railings and gates.

In total, 243 metres of 1200mm high bow top metal railings and 143m of varying height vertical bar railings were installed to a number of locations within The Glebe in an effort to help pedestrianise the area.

In addition to this, Alpha Rail also installed six 1200mm high bow top gates, four of which were single leaf, with the remaining two manufactured in a double leaf style.

All metalwork manufactured by Alpha Rail for The Glebe regeneration project was supplied galvanised and polyester powder coated Jet Black RAL 9005.

Commenting on behalf of the Casey Group, Quantity Surveyor, Kevin Griffin said “A key focal point of this project was to install metal railings and gates that were fit for purpose and not detract from the natural beauty of this popular Lake District tourist attraction. Alpha Rail delivered on this brief, and I am very happy with the service they provided.”

Phil Ball, Sales Director at Alpha Rail added “We are proud to play our part in a project where our products have contributed towards increased pedestrianisation within a busy tourist destination. The railings met the technical specification perfectly, and were installed on time as promised.”
