Project Overview

The Forest Recreation Ground in Nottingham, which is perhaps more famously known as the site of the legendary “Goose Fair” which takes place every October, has recently benefited from  £5.2million investment. The work was to restore and refurbish historic features including the Pavilion and Grade II Listed Lodge as well as improvements to football pitches, play areas, bowls greens and a number of designated leisure walks.

Nottingham City Council, the Partnership Council, Castle Cavendish Foundation and Friends of the Forest, worked together to successfully secure funding worth £5.2 million to restore the site to its former glory.

The £5.2 funding is made up of, £3.2 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund, £2 million from Nottingham City Council, Castle Cavendish Foundation and local development contributions.

Alpha Rail Solution

Alpha Rail were appointed by Carillion and worked alongside landscape architects, LDA design based in Peterborough. We manufactured all metal work at our factory in Kirkby in Ashfield, as well as providing painted, large cast iron feature entrance pillars bearing The Forest name. In total over 620 linear meters of metal railings and six of gates were installed at various locations across the site. The new railings have been painted green and finished with bespoke finials bearing the crest of Nottingham.

This Forest Recreation Ground project is the fourth in a long run of prestigious projects the company has completed. Other high profile projects have included; The Jack Hobbs gates at the Kia Oval cricket ground, new metal railings and gates within Beacon Park in Lichfield which was recently opened by HRH Princess Anne, and the play area railings surrounding the award winning London Landmark, Jubilee Gardens which were opened on the Southbank of the Thames, adjacent to the London Eye to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

"Reinstating the railings around the park is a key part of the Forest restoration, they are an important feature that will improve the overall appearance of the park and will help restore the site to its former glory. With an estimated 750,000 visits per year we want the park to be welcoming and for Nottingham people to feel proud of the city’s heritage."
- Councillor David Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at Nottingham City Council.
