Selly Oak Flood Alleviation Scheme, Birmingham

Location:

Birmingham

Project Overview

The Selly Oak Flood Alleviation scheme was enacted in a response to severe flash flooding that occurred in the summer of 2016 which caused chaos with hundreds of homes, businesses, cars and roads becoming submerged under water.

The defence plan will reduce the risk of flooding to over 150 local homes and businesses in the Selly Park North and Selly Oak area of Birmingham. The scheme will also help to keep key highway routes and infrastructure open to emergency services during times of adverse weather.

Alpha Rail Solution

Delivered by the Environment Agency, working as part of the Rea Catchment Partnership, the flood alleviation scheme involves deepening and widening an existing flood water storage area near the Bourn Brook Walkway on Harborne Lane.

Appointed by Civil Engineering Contractors, CPC Civils, Alpha Rail was instructed to manufacture, supply and install 136 linear metres of Pedestrian Parapet Guardrail.

The pedestrian barrier was installed to specific areas within Selly Oak Park to guide pedestrians along approved pathways and to separate them from oncoming vehicular traffic and potential high risk areas.

"This scheme is a great example of how, by working with trusted contractors like Alpha Rail, we can better protect homes and businesses but also deliver other benefits to local people: such as helping to keep vital transport links open."
