Brayford Wharf, Lincoln

Location:

Lincoln

Project Overview

Bespoke pedestrian parapet guardrail manufactured by Alpha Rail has been installed at the Brayford Wharf area of Lincoln as part of the Brayford regeneration scheme.

Situated in the centre of Lincoln, just minutes away from the High Street shopping area, Brayford Harbour is the oldest inland Harbour in England, dating back to pre-Roman times.

The area has undergone major regeneration works in recent years. A number of large scale developments, including the new £19 million University of Lincoln medical facility, have been erected around the iconic waterfront location, in a bid to create a vibrant cultural quarter that will become a magnet for local people, tourists and students.

In order to cater for increased visitors numbers and to pedestrianise the area, Alpha Rail was appointed by ECS Engineering Services to supply a bespoke pedestrian parapet guardrail system around the perimeter of the waters edge.

Following the completion of a thorough site survey, Alpha Rail advised that pedestrian parapet guardrail would be the most appropriate guardrail solution to protect pedestrians falling into the river.

Pedestrian Parapet guardrail is usually installed on cycle paths or bridleways where there is a fall risk such that the pedestrian guardrail requires extra strength and height.

Alpha Rail Solution

On this project, the pedestrian barrier has been installed to guide people along approved pathways and to separate them from the adjacent river.

In total 98 metres of various “Lincoln” style Pedestrian parapet guardrail was baseplated into the perimeter walls protecting against falling into the River Witham. ECS benefitted from Alpha Rails local knowledge of previous installations and were able to suggest the “Lincoln” pattern of railing for only a modest increase in price over the standard pedestrian railing. The suggested railings provided a much more attractive solution.

In some areas where the perimeter wall was only 170mm wide, “L” shaped base plates were used to ensure the metal railings were fixed securely.

All metalwork provided for this project was supplied galvanised and polyester powder coated in RAL 9005 black.

"I am delighted with the outcome of the metal railings installed at Brayford Wharf. Alpha Rail provided some great advice in terms of what railings to install to comply with current legislation. With the help of Alpha Rails expert design and supply team, ECS were able to complete the installation in just a few days"
