Project Overview

‘The Walks’ is a stunning public park which dates back almost 800 years. It comprises stunning tree lined avenues covering a 27 acre expanse, right in the heart of King’s Lynn.

Widely used by local people and visitors, its facilities include tennis and basketball courts, children’s playground and recreation areas where people can spend their leisure time in the beauty and tranquility of this stunning mature parkland.

With the help of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, King’s Lynn Council were organising the “The Walks Restoration Project”

The work involved the replacement of gates and railings, the installation of new play equipment, the replacement of benches and bins, as well as bridge repairs and tree replacements.

Working alongside the main contractor UCS, Alpha Rail were appointed to manufacture guard rail and bow top railings to run around much of the perimeter of the park, alongside the tree lined avenues, to the side of the Norman church and around the Seven Sisters – a circular arrangement of lime trees with religious significance. Special knee-height trip rail was incorporated into the design, which involved a single bar rail which allowed walkers to enjoy the beauty of the park, whilst protecting the many grassed areas.

The Walks is the latest in a list of prestigious parks that Alpha Rail has supplied with new gates and railings. Other projects have included: Wollaton Park in Nottingham, St Leonards Gardens, Dorchester Gardens, Battersea Park in Wandsworth (winner of a Civic Trust Award), Roundhay Park in Leeds and Handsworth Park in Birmingham.

"We have worked with Alpha Rail before and knew the quality of their work and that we could be assured the work would be completed on time. We were also delighted to be able to keep the park open throughout its restoration, to ensure that people could enjoy its facilities at all times. We were awarded Considerate Contractor for this project, something which we are really proud of"
